Lesson 3 - Objective 8 (Thursday)
B03-08 Principles of Design: Contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity
Objective:
In lesson 2, you had reading assignments about Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity, which are four basic principles of design. What is design? Design is the thought, purpose, planning, or intention behind any creation. It determines the look and functioning of a creation. Graphic designers create graphics that have a purpose or function, and use basic principles and elements of design to effectively achieve that purpose or function. Consciously considering these principles will help you avoid creating "crap." So as you create graphics in Photoshop or other tools, go through these in your head. "How have I used contrast? Repetition? Alignment? and Proximity?"
Please take time to read through each of the following brief presentations about Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity. They are visual reviews of what you've learned in lesson 2's reading assignments.
- Review the graphic design principles of contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. See additional examples of each being used in designs..

Now watch these practical applications of graphic design by John McWade. As you watch each of them, think in terms of how he has used contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. Can you see any of these principles being put into action? See if you can visually recognize example of each principle being implemented.
