Lesson 5 - Objectives 7-8 (Thursday)

B05-07 Review contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity

Objectives:
  • Understand how the principle of repetition contributes to harmony and unity in design
Learn:
Repetition plays a very important role in design.  It provides consistency, unity, and organization to an image or document.  It makes things look like they belong in the same "family."  There are many elements in a design that could be repeated - it may be a color, a shape, a line, a texture, a value, a space, a font, etc.  Repetition gives visual clues as to the organization of a book.  Chapter headings will be set in the same font and color and size.  Subheadings will have their own distinct look.  Paragraph text is all set in the same font and style.  These visual clues help you understand how a book is organized, and makes it much easier for you to find and access the information you're looking for.

Repetition can be thought of as "consistency."  For a graphic designer or artist, it is a conscious effort to unify a design. Look at the following examples I found on Pinterest.com...
As you looked through the gallery above (just click on the first image, and then use your left or right arrow keys to move through the gallery), what kinds of visual elements are being repeated?  How do they provide unity, consistency, and organization?

As a visual artist, when I used to paint with oils or watercolor, one thing I learned that would help unify a painting was to add a touch of the same single color to every color mixture.  This would unify, and tie all the colors together to make a more visually pleasing result.  It is the same principle - repetition.

You learned in the last lesson that when choosing fonts for a design, you should stick to one or two fonts at the most.  Maybe three if there is a good reason for it.  Why?  The repetition of a font helps unify an image or document.  When you create images, documents, or designs, remember contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity.  These principles will help you design professional, clean, and attractive works of art.

B05-08 Skill: Saving your image as a PDF file in Photoshop

Objectives:
  • Learn how to create a multi-page PDF file in Photoshop CC
Learn:
In later lessons, we'll discuss things you'll need to do to send an image to a professional print shop.  In the video, "Multi Page PDF In Photoshop - How To Tutorial 2018 (The Easy Way!)," you'll learn how to save multiple layers into a multi-page pdf file you could send to a print shop. Please watch the video.
