Photoshop has a "Save for Web" command in the File menu that allows you to precisely adjust your image so that it will work perfectly on your website. Watch the video!
Please note, in the newer versions of Photoshop CC, the save for web command is now FILE > EXPORT > SAVE FOR WEB (LEGACY)

RGB - Red, Green, Blue (additive color - displays)
CMYK - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black (subtractive color - print)
Greyscale - 256 shades of grey
Indexed Color - up to 256 colors in a palette
Bitmap - 2 colors only - black and white
Duotone - This option is similar to greyscale - 256 shades of grey - but you can add up to three other colors (duotone, tritone, quadtone)
LAB - Lightness, A Channel (red+green), B Channel (blue+yellow)
