Lesson 11 - Objective 8 (Thursday)
B11-08 Skill: Exercises to Demonstrate Your Learning...
Objectives:
- Apply what you've learned in the previous lesson 11 objectives. Use the pen tool to remove subjects from their backgrounds.
Now that you've gone through Michael's tutorials, let's try using the pen tool to mask some objects. On the left will be the original image. In the center will be the image I want you to create. On the right, I'll provide a video that walks you through it, in case you need some help.
Exercise 1: Let's begin by returning to our $100 bill - and this time we'll select it using the pen tool... Be sure you've renamed your path from work path to money in the paths panel. You'll be turning this in as part of the assignment for this week - B11-01_YourName.PSD |
Exercise 2: This exercise will be a little harder, but will be excellent practice. Watch the video on this one! It will show you how to select the model and her guitar with the pen tool and create a vector mask. It will show you how to refine the vector mask to get the selection just right. Then it will show you how to turn the vector mask into a regular mask, so you can use the refine mask command to take care of the strands of hair. When finished, be sure to rename your path from 'work path' to 'girl'. You'll be turning this exercise in as part of this week's assignment. B11-02_Your_Name.PSD

You may run into a problem with your path looking inverted from the one I'm showing in the video above. Using the path as a selection is just like using a mask as a selection. You command-click on the path thumbnail image in the paths panel - and it will create a selection of "marching ants." Like a mask, what is white becomes the selection, and what is dark grey will not be selected.
In the example at right my path on the top is inverted because I had the wrong option set in the options bar of the pen tool. I began my selection with "subtract from shape" chosen in the options bar. So if I try to make this into a selection - it's going to select everything but the apple. This is not too hard to fix. Just go into the options and choose "combine shapes" or any of the other options that work to invert it. Now when I command-click (CTRL-click) on the path thumbnail, the apple will be selected. Click the image at right for a larger view. |
