Lesson 13 - Objectives 3-4 (Wednesday)

B13-03 Skill - Using Photoshop's sharpening filters
Objectives:
  • Learn some of the best ways to sharpen an image in Photoshop, including shake reduction!
  • Learn that sharpening an image is the last step in any Photoshop work flow.
Learn:
Photoshop offers many ways to sharpen an image. Some are older, such as sharpen, sharpen edges, and sharpen more. I never use those anymore. Three in the Filter > Sharpen menu that give you more options are shake reduction, smart sharpen, and unsharp mask. Also, there is another powerful way in the Filter > Other menu - High Pass Filter. Basically, all of them fool your eyes into thinking an image is sharpened by adding more contrast to the edges. It's one easy way to spot a Photoshopped image. There are some smart ways to get sharpening and have it look more realistic. Please watch, "Finally! Sharpen without ANY halos in Photoshop."

In general, though, I do most of my sharpening and noise removal in Camera Raw, because that usually produces the results I want better than any other method.  My second choice is usually the high pass filter. And smart sharpen is my third choice.  It's all a matter of personal preference.  Shake reduction is pretty powerful, too. You'll settle on the methods that works best for you.  Please watch the videos, "How to Sharpen Images Using High Pass Filter on Photoshop CC" and "Using Shake Reduction in Adobe Photoshop."
