Lesson 14:   14-A   14-B   14-C   14-D

Lesson 14 - Objectives 3-4 (Tuesday)

B14-03 Using satin, inner glow, inner shadow, stroke, and bevel & emboss
Objective:
  • Learn how to apply inner glow, inner shadow, stroke, and bevel and emboss effects in Photoshop.
Learn and Apply:
Now that you've seen some videos on how to apply layer effects in B14-02, go through each of the layer effects below on your own and try them out!
Picture
Image: Satin allows you to create some very interesting effects within an object on the layer it's being applied to. You have to play with the settings and see what it will do!
Picture
Image: Inner glow does the same thing as outer glow, except the effect is applied within the object rather than on the outside.
Picture
Image: Inner shadow gives the effect of having a cutout.
Picture
Image: Stroke allows you to create a stroke of a color, gradient, or pattern around the edges of an object in a layer. The stroke can be on the inside, center, or outside. You can add multiple strokes as I have done with red and blue here.
Picture
Image: Bevel & Emboss gives the pixels on a layer a beveled look - and there are lots of options with this one. You can add contours and textures - and can do some pretty amazing effects with them.
Picture
Image: The real power comes when you use several effects on a layer. Or you can use effects on multiple layers as I have done here.
B14-04 Using the blending effects dialog - transparent text
Objective:
  • Learn how to use the blending effects dialog in Photoshop.
Learn and Apply:
At the top of the layer effects is one called blending options.  This is quite powerful.  Watch the following videos to learn why and how to use this dialog.
Picture
Video: Retouching Tutorial: Working with Layer Blend If Sliders in Adobe Photoshop (7:32)
Picture
Image: Another powerful feature of the blending options is the fill opacity slider. This slider reduces the opacity of the pixels on the layer, but not the layer effects. Essentially, you can have transparent text. The opacity slider reduces the opacity of everything - layer pixels and effects both.
