Lesson 14:   14-A   14-B   14-C   14-D

Lesson 14 - Objectives 5-6 (Wednesday)

B14-05 Scaling layer effects in Photoshop
Objective:
  • Learn how to scale your layer effects so they are perfect for your image.
Learn and Apply:
A layer style may have been set for a particular resolution and features of a certain size. Using Scale Effects allows you to scale the effects in your layer's resolution without scaling the object to which the layer style is applied. See the two images below that demonstrate this.
Picture
1 - Select the layer in the Layers panel.
2 - Choose Layer > Layer Style > Scale Effects.

3 - Enter a percentage or drag the slider.
4 - Select Preview to preview the changes in the image.
5 - Click OK
B14-06 An introduction to Photoshop styles - How to create and save a style in Photoshop
Objective:
  • Learn how to create a reusable (and shareable) style out of layer effects you've applied. Then learn how to save that style so you can back it up or share it with a friend.
Learn:
A style is simply a collection of layer effects that are saved in Photoshop.  In section B14-07 of the lesson, I will show you how to install, and delete a style. Let's begin by creating a layer style from some layer effects.  Follow along with the tutorial on creating a water droplet set of layer effects. Then you'll save that as a layer style. I will also show you how to back up your style as a file.

I think you'll be amazed at what you can do with layer effects and styles.  For a sampling, go visit my friend's styles gallery on deviantart.com.  I also have created a few styles that I like to use. I've included links to several of them in this lesson.

Apply: Exercise B14-06

In the tutorial, you created a water drop style in Photoshop. Save your Photoshop file as B14-06_Your_Name.psd, and save your style as Water Drops.ASL. Zip the two files together as B14-06.zip. You'll submit this as part of the lesson exercises this week.
